Why the US Does Not Want You Ordering Prescriptions From Canadian Suppliers

The Food and Drug Administration estimates that over 2 million shipments of prescription drugs will come from Canada this year, until recently the FDA has allowed people to make trips over the border for prescription drugs. But now many American seniors have turned to online doctors for their online prescription needs. This has helped seniors who are not mobile as well as being economical for seniors on Medicaid Plan D, but it comes at a price for American pharmacies and drug companies.

The Manitoba International Pharmacies Association, an association of online doctors, found that over 1 million US residents were seeking prescriptions from Canadian suppliers and bringing their medications back across the border. A lot of this has been curbed due to legitimate online physicians in the US. In the past, there were storefronts acting as middlemen for American customers and Canadian pharmacies opening in cities across the US. These under the radar “pharmacies” send online prescription information to Canadian partners, who then get a prescription online from a Canadian doctor, fill the online prescription, and send the medication to the US patient.

Large pharmaceutical companies, concerned about their profits, starting cutting medication shipments to online prescription services in Canada that sold to US patients. As more drug companies cut shipments to these online doctors then the demand would dry up. There could also be a risk involved with online prescriptions from overseas companies with less than ethical standards.

There have been many reports about counterfeit medications made by drug manufacturers in China who use improper practices, bad storage techniques and deceptive labeling, selling their illegal drugs to Canadian online doctors. This is of grave concern to the FDA, they are charged with protecting the rights of patients who get a prescription from a doctor online.

If you receive a prescription online that looks odd or has different packaging you should report it to the FDA, especially if you received it from a foreign prescription online service. If you can’t actually speak to the online doctor then you should be wary of their services. An online medical consultation coupled with a phone consultation ensures that the online doctor you use is reputable. Another sign of counterfeit medication is if the pills taste odd, have a flaky appearance or strange odor. Whatever you do, do not take the pills, if you have you need to consult poison control immediately. Without knowing what type of process was used in the manufacturing of the pills you could put yourself in danger. Seniors and people with poor eyesight need to pay close attention to the types of medication they receive from online prescription services.

Online doctors have helped many people but operations like these Canadian pharmacies hurt the reputation of upstanding American online prescription services. Make sure that you know who your online doctor is and make sure they are available to give you an online consultation or phone consultation.
