How Online Pharmacies Find Doctors

Traditional online pharmacies have doctors on staff for years, they act as a classic medical pharmacy—writing prescription online, filling prescriptions and giving online medical consultation to patients. But, there is a new online pharmacy, one that does not play by all the rules. These “no prescription pharmacies” operate under what they call “remote consultations”, which are basically hand written prescriptions for patients without proper prescriptions.

Reputable online doctor offices work to review a patient’s medical history, while “no prescription pharmacies” will usually work off a questionnaire—then write a prescription online for the patients perceived medical condition. U.S. states have varying laws on what is actually a valid online medical consultation.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) along with the American Medical Associate (AMA) have criticized those online doctors who give a prescription online without a valid prescription. Without proper documentation of patient care, both the FDA and AMA prevent online prescription services from joining their ranks.

But the real problem with these fly-by-night operations is that they attract doctors from the fringes of the medical field. These online doctors may have had past problems, be poorly trained or could be practicing without a license. There have been many instances of online doctors with substance abuse problems, malpractice history and extreme financial debt.

Shady online prescription services have hired doctors with a history of alcohol abuse, drug dependency and bipolar disorder. One online doctor was cited for providing inadequate care to patients, one of them died. Some online doctors operate under a fictitious name while hoping from job to job. Don’t be fooled by an online prescription service that claims to give prescriptions over the internet, only your doctor can write a genuine prescription.

So where do good online doctors come from?

1. Through a reference. Many online doctors find work at online prescription clinics through references, maybe they worked with the attending physician before or perhaps they know someone at the clinic. A reputable online physician will always check the references of any new staff member.

2. Through a network of online doctor placement centers. Many doctors are looking for work and some of them look to placement agencies, typically the same type of operation as in a traditional job placement board. These agencies look for an online doctor who is knowledgeable, hard working and dependable. They review the doctors’ credentials and make sure that their references check out.

3. Monster or CareerBuilder. Believe it or not there are online prescription services looking on the internet for help. A lot of doctors, who are looking for work or looking for part time work, will look for online pharmacies who need a doctor on call. These doctors are especially valuable because they offer expertise while enabling the online prescription service to function normally.
If you get a prescription from a doctor online you need to check their references, is the pharmacy accessible or is there a doctor on call? Make sure you can speak with an actual doctor online before committing to your online prescription service.
