Rating Doctors Like You Would Rate a Restaurant

Who among us wouldn't like a website that reviewed online doctors much like Yelp or Zagat? People check Yelp constantly to see the reviews of their favorite restaurant, but there isn't any way to rate your favorite online prescription service. So why is it so hard for patients to find a good site where they can discuss their encounters with doctors and talk with other patients about their experience?

Recently, WellPoint, a large insurance company, decided to team up with Zagat to see what patients had to say about the doctors and prescriptions online help they receive. The patients can rate doctors online in four different categories, which indicates whether they would recommend the doctor and adding comments to other users posts. The end result will be an averaged score for doctors online and online prescription services. Patients can rank doctors on a scale from poor to extraordinary.

Still, some online doctors worry that patients are in no position to judge a doctor based on one visit with them, especially when an incompetent doctor could just as easily charm their way into the patients heart, which would disregard the actual medical process in favor of a patients personal taste. It's a slippery slope for some online doctors, who do not want one mistake to costs them patients. There have been other systems that rate doctors based on patient evaluations but nothing like this project.

Of course you have to wonder about the online doctors complaining about this site, maybe they aren't the ones who are willing to take constructive criticism? Despite what one online doctor might say, it's a good program for patients  and it provides them with a sense of helping the doctor. Online prescription services can also benefit from something similar that rates their expertise, timeliness and aptitude.

But, patients are the ones who know how their doctor treated them. They may have confidence in that doctor or they may not like their way of speaking. Anything could cause a good, honest online doctor to be blacklisted by one patient who did not agree with that doctors assessment. Of course, dealing with an online doctor is different than a traditional doctor, so patients will have to factor in those differences when evaluating doctors online.

There are several ways to evaluate doctors online, such as: was it hard to schedule an appointment, or did you have access to the doctor quickly or a long wait, was the staff helpful? All of these things will need to be covered in an online doctor review site.

So far the WellPoint system is only available for members of that insurance group, but it's a good idea, so don't be surprised to see other sites popping up or other insurance groups doing the same. Some doctors may not like it, but it's the way the world is going. We are all connected and everyone has a voice.
