1 in 4 British Doctors Say They Have Treated Patients for Side Effects from No-Prescription Pills

A recent study conducted by GP magazine, an online general practitioner site, found that one in four British doctors said that they have treated patients for side effects of online prescription medication, specifically from online doctors who do not check for a prescription. As to date there have been no studies for American online doctors but this British study sheds some light on a growing problem.

The doctors reported patients with complications after buying online prescription medication for insomnia, anxiety, panic attacks and even fake Viagra.  The study’s findings show that patients should be careful when using prescription online services, as well as highlighting the prevalence of counterfeit medication.

Doctors say that patients should only take online prescription medication after an online medical consultation from an accredited doctor online. If your online physician is not readily available either through online means or by telephone, then you should avoid that doctor.

But the blame does not lie solely with the fake online doctor; legitimate online doctors should ask patients a variety of questions before sending any prescription drugs. A real online physician will ask you if you have any allergies or complications with medication, if your online doctor does not check, then it’s a good sign that they are not reputable.

Different surveys have shown that many online prescription services are trafficking in high quantities of counterfeit medication and that many of them contain harmful ingredients. A lot of the time, when buying medications through an online prescription service, people do not know what they are getting. Something could look like the correct medication but be a completely forged copy of it. Counterfeiters are adept at disguising their packaging and their phony pills to appear more like the real thing.

Patients should go through a number of checks when looking for an online doctor. The patient should check the registration of the online pharmacist, look for the name and address of the online doctor, check and see if it is connected to a “brick and mortar” pharmacy and always avoid sites that offer prescription only medication without a valid prescription. And always be aware that a legitimate online prescription service will ask you questions before allowing you to purchase medication online.

As always, if you want to purchase medication through an online prescription service you should verify that the website is real and reputable. If you purchase medication outside of the US, patients should be aware that medications with familiar brand names may contain different ingredients. Also, some packaging may come in languages that the patient is unfamiliar with, this could lead to the patient taking the wrong dosage, or it might interfere with medications the patient is already on.
