What are the Signs of a Cold Sore Outbreak?

"Cold Sore" is something of a misnomer.

A cold sore is caused by the herpes simplex virus. The general consensus is that anyone who's had chicken pox as a child is carrying the herpes virus. It may or may not even manifest itself, but if it does, it'll be in the form of shingles, genital herpes or lip and mouth sores (cold sores). An online doctor can diagnose you if you notice these symptoms.

What are the Symptoms?

A cold sore outbreak is usually preceded by pain around the mouth and lips, a sore throat, fever and swollen glands in the neck and other areas. The pain might also be accompanied by tingling, burning, itching or numbness in the affected area. Once again, if you notice these symptoms developing consult your online doctor at KoolDocs.com, many online doctors today offer a prescription online. The cold sores themselves will appear as blisters around the lips. It'll take a few days to 2 weeks for the blisters to develop, rupture, ooze a clear fluid, then crust over and eventually disappear. The cold sores themselves can be very painful for some people, sometimes painful enough to make eating or drinking difficult. If your're in doubt about whether they're actually cold sores or not, a doctor can do a culture of the fluid to screen it for the herpes virus.

There's no cure for the herpes simplex virus; there are only ways to treat the symptoms. There are, however, creams, ointments and pills that can speed the healing of cold sore blisters; some of them are available as an online prescription. Antiviral prescriptions are also available in pill form. There are also ways to avoid spreading the virus or having another outbreak.

Like shingles, cold sores can be brought on by stressful situations. Find ways to manage and deal with stress better. Exposure to sunlight can cause cold sores as well, so remember to use sunscreen and lip balm on your face. Be conscious of hand washing and other basic hygiene such as not using the toothbrush or towel of someone who's affected by cold sores.

Other infections such as cold or flu can result in cold sores, so these hygiene protocols would apply to heading off a cold or flu a well. More importantly, a cold sore can be the result of a compromised immune system; stress, fatigue or a lasting cold can all bring your immune system to its knees. Consult your online doctor if you have any of these problems. Vitamin C, lysine and lemon balm supplements can help fortify your system if you're compromised. Some studies show that zinc oxide/glycine topical cream can reduce the duration of an outbreak and some medication is available as an online prescription. there are also prescription-strength mouthwashes that can reduce pain during that stage of a cold sore outbreak.

If you have frequent outbreaks of cold sores, talk to you doctor (or an online doctor). You may be able to take pills or get a prescription online that can help prevent outbreaks or treat the cold sores if they do come up.
