10 Best Ways to Soothe a Sore Throat

Most cases of a sore throat are caused by viruses and typically do not need medical treatment. This should not be confused with strep throat which is contagious and is caused by an infection with streptococcal bacteria. The symptoms of strep throat include fever, pain, redness and swelling of the throat and tonsils. If you are experiencing these symptoms, you can make a quick call to the doctors online at KoolDocs.com, and confirm whether you just have a mild sore throat, or a more serious condition. Your online physician will be able to give you prescriptions online as well.

If you are experiencing a sore throat and are looking for some easy, inexpensive and effective ways to treat it while you battle a cold or flu, the list below will give you some alternative ways to soothe your sore throat and have you feeling better in no time!

  1. Gargle with aloe vera juice up to two times daily.
  2. Mix 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar and 1/4 cup of honey. Take one tablespoon every four hours or as needed for pain relief.
  3. Make a tea adding 1 or 2 teaspoons of dried chamomile blossoms to a pint of boiling water; steep and drink a cup every few hours. You can also purchase chamomile tea and brew it from tea bags; this type of tea is very popular in helping soothe an irritated sore throat.
  4. Peel the skin from a small ginger root. Slice the root into thin strips and place the strips into a small pot of water and boil the strips, making a nice tea. The tea should turn a yellowish (straw) or tan color. Add three tablespoons of your favorite honey to sweeten the tea. As you slowly sip the tea, it should tingle the back of your throat when swallowing it.
  5. Add the juice of one lemon and one teaspoon of salt to one cup of warm water. Gargle three times a day for one minute.
  6. Sucking on licorice candy or drinking licorice tea made by steeping one teaspoon of licorice root in a cup of hot water for three minutes will also provide relief. Drinking the tea will also help clear mucus.
  7. Boil some pomegranate rinds and drink as a tea. The pomegranate contains astrigents that will soothe a sore throat.
  8. Mix a teaspoon of salt and dissolve completely in eight ounces of hot water. Gargle with the mixture several times a day. This will increase the blood supply to the area by washing away mucus and dilating capillaries, and has been proven to help in the ciruclation of infection-fighting antibodies.
  9. A peppermint, or other hard candy will also help to calm a sore throat.
  10. Grind one tablespoon of mustard seed and combine this with the juice of half a lemon, one tablespoon of salt, and one tablespoon of clear honey. Add to one and a half cups of boiling water. Leave this mixture, covered, for 15 minutes and then you can use the mixture to gargle with up to four times a day.

If none of these treatments work, you may have a more serious condition. Consult with your doctor online, and keep your personal medical consultant aware of any changes or improvements.
