Life Expectancy Falls in the U.S., Despite Increased Health Care Spending

America continues to fall behind other developed nations when it comes to life expectancy. Rates for obesity, smoking, homicide and traffic deaths are not to blame, according to Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health.

The US has seen gains in life expectancy from the decades between 1975 and 2005, but researchers have seen other countries experience an even greater gain. Why is the US slipping like this?

The research found that the failure of the US to make gains in survival rates, while spending more on health care system, created flaws in the overall health care system. The findings show that failing survival rates are directly linked to unregulated payments for services and reliance on specialty care. The US health care system did not increase overall life expectancy when compared with other developed countries health care systems.

What does this tell us about our own health care system? It means that unless things change we will be forced to break away from the health care system, which until recently held patients in its grasp, and embrace the new health care system.

With better health care comes a group of patients who are able to afford all of their prescriptions online and can work with doctors online to find the medication that are right for them. We have an increasingly aged population in this country and many people rely on online prescription medication to deal with a myriad of problems. If health care laws were kept the same, then patients would not be able to by their life saving prescriptions online. They would be kept to the same rigid source of patient care that drove up cost and had many people without health coverage.

The lead author of the study Peter Muennig, MD, MPH, assistant professor of Health Policy and Management at the Mailman School of Public Health, said it was “shocking to see the US falling behind countries even as cost soared.”

Cleary something is wrong with a healthcare system if academics are shocked by their findings. Costs have been driven up so high that people are forced to find alternatives such as online prescription services and doctors online. Without proper medical care many Americans can go without their needed online prescriptions. There are a lot of Americans out there living without health insurance and if online prescription services help them where a failing health system will not, then better for the system.

The only fear is what will happen once health care takes effect. Will online prescription services be accounted for and will patients be able to use their health coverage for online doctors? This is still a grey area but hopefully there will be no online prescription restrictions due to health coverage. But, online prescriptions save people money, that’s why there so popular; you can get the same prescription online filled and have it in your hand quickly. With online prescriptions you don’t have to spend more, even as health care cost rise.
