Just The Facts- Breast Cancer

In 2006, 191,410 women were diagnosed with breast cancer, and 40,820 women died from the disease.  Except for skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) supports breast cancer surveillance and research, and provides free low cost mammograms to underserved women.  Here are some facts about breast cancer:

1.)  Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women.

2.)  The risk of breast cancer increases with age.

3.)  1.7 million breast cancer cases were diagnosed worldwide in 2007.

4.)  465,000 women died due to breast cancer in 2007.

5.)  North America, Australia, and Europe have the highest incidence of breast cancer.

6.)  Large Parts of Africa and Asia have the lowest rates of breast cancer.

7.)  Increased risk of developing breast cancer include:

Start of menstrual period at any age

Menopause later in life

Having a first or second degree relative with breast cancer

Obesity

Consumption of alcohol

Never having children

Using contraceptive (birth control pill)

Using hormone replacement therapy during post menopausal years

8.)  Decreased breast cancer risk

Breast feeding

Moderate physical activity

Maintaining normal weight

Stop Smoking
