True or Not-Do Cell Phones Cause Cancer?

Posted 05-18-2010 6:35 pm by
To many, a cell phone is a device that we just can't live without.  Rarely does anyone think about the radiation that is released from a cell phone, but should we?

You've most likely heard of the many news stories today regarding studies on cell phones and brain tumors.  Is there any validation to such a speculation? According to a recent study in the International Journal of Epidemiology, the link between cell phone usage and brain tumors is inconclusive.  No evidence has been found that constitutes calls made with a mobile phone against one's ear incrases risk for brain cancer.  BUT, the study also could not prove that no such link exists, and that further investigation is needed.

Debate aside, CNN has put together the following ways to keep the potentially damaging radiation waves away from your brain:

  1. Use a speaker phone whenever possible. This keeps the phone away from your ear, and is easy to do.  Only downside? No privacy if anyone is around.
  2. Text instead of talking.  Impersonal maybe, but this keeps the phone away from your ear.
  3. Purchase a lower-radiation phone.  There are several guides that exist out there demonstrating radiation by phone model. While this does not eliminate radiation exposure, it can give you options for purchasing a phone with lower radiation emission.
  4. Use a headset.  Wireless and wired headsets both put less radiation on the side of your head than a phone.
  5. This is simple-Talk Less! Meet up with people in person, send an email, or just keep the phone conversations short.
