The ‘dog days’ of summer are upon us and the heat is at its worst, so how can you keep your kids and your pets safe in your car? The answer is you can’t.
Your car acts as a greenhouse of sorts, trapping the sun’s heat and making the temperature go far beyond the outside temperature. Temperatures can get so warm inside a car on a summer day that children and pets alike can be killed. It is not safe to leave someone or a pet inside a car in such conditions even with cracked windows and an open sunroof. Studies have shown that during the hottest part of the day, around 2:00 pm, when temperatures are about 90 degrees outside, temperatures inside cars can get to be 115 or more very quickly. So do your kids, pets and yourself a favor and either take them with you, even for a quick one minute run into a post office or leave them home (with proper supervision for the children), because you never know when a one minute trip could turn into a 20 minute trip while your car turns into an oven.
