10 Simple Ways to Lower Cholesterol

  1. Portion Control- Eat "hand-sized" portions of food.  A piece of fish or meat should fit in the  palm of your hand as well as a serving of fruit or vegetables.
  2. Eat Heart Healthy Food- Fruits and vegetables lower bad cholesterol and contain plant sterols.
  3. Eat Fish- Fish contains Omega-3 fatty acids which help lower levels of triglycerides.  Fish such as salmon, tuna, trout and sardines.  Bake, broil or grill your fish.  Do not deep fry.
  4. Eat Plenty of Grains- a bowl of oatmeal or whole grain cereal will meet your daily requirement for whole grains. The advantage of whole grains is that they provide a feeling of fullness.
  5. Eat Nuts- Nuts are high in monosaturated fat, which lowers LDL (bad) cholesterol and retains HDL (good) cholesterol.
  6. More Beans- Beans are a good substitute (as a carbohydrate) for potatoes, bread, pasta or rice.
  7. Exercise at least 30 minutes daily.
  8. When Eating Out- choose broiled, baked, steamed and grilled over fryed and get sauces on the side.
  9. Reduce Stress Levels
  10. Lose weight
