The Dangers of Over-The-Counter Medicines for Babies and Toddlers

Posted 09-02-2009 5:26 am by
No one wants to see a young child sick or in discomfort. As parents, you want to do anything you can to make the child feel better, or at the very least, relieve some of the symptoms.

OTC medSince 1985, several tests on the effectiveness of children’s medicine have taken place, and the conclusive evidence in each of them has been that in children up to age twelve, both the actual medicine and placebo had the same reaction to the children’s illnesses - nothing.
Not only do the medicines fail to better your child, they have potentially life threatening side effects. From 2004 to 2005, over 1,519 children under two years old in the United States alone were sent to the emergency room because of a severe reaction or accidental overdose of cough or cold medicine in their system.

Resulting problems from the medicines were cardiac abnormalities, loss of consciousness, and permanent brain damage. 123 of those 1,519 emergencies in 2004 and 2005 led to deaths that were officially ruled to be at fault of the medicines by the FDA.

Although it is tough to see children suffering from a bad cough or runny nose, the best way to heal them is to use fruits and foods rich in vitamins and nutrients, as well as plenty of adequate rest and liquids, so that their bodies can cure themselves naturally rather than risking serious damages or even death by over the counter medicines.
