To Be or Not to Be…an Organ Donor

Posted 11-21-2009 2:53 am by
Do you ever question your choice in becoming an organ donor?  Did you avoid becoming an organ donor because you have heard rumors that doctors don't work as hard to try and save an organ donors life?

organIf you answered yes to either of these questions you will be relieved to know that doctors do not slack off on trying to save your life if you happen to be an organ donor.

When you go to the hospital it is your doctor's highest priority to try their hardest to save your life in a life-threatening situation – no matter who you are, where you came from, or what you do.  Emergency physicians possess the best skills to treat your medical problem, and are very unlikely to even be the organ transplant doctor.

In most, if not all, cases, doctors do not have any idea whether or not you are an organ donor until you die, and if you happen to be an organ donor even more tests are conducted to determine that you are officially dead. (Sorry for the morbidity here.)

When you decide to become an organ donor it is not even guaranteed that your organs will even be donated.  To further convince you that doctors do try to save an organ donor's life just as they would a non-organ donor, doctors are actually more likely than the general public to make themselves organ donors and recommend their family members to become organ donors as well.  So when the time comes to choose whether or not to become an organ donor just remember that doctors will try their hardest to save your life in a serious situation just as they would a non-donor, and to top that, you might even be able to save the life of one of the 100,000 people on that long waiting list…

The choice is yours!
