Everday in the United States, about 75 people die as a result of unintentional poisoning, and another 2,000 are treated in emergency departments (ED)

A posion is any substance that is harful to your body when ingested (eaten), inhaled, injected or absorbed through the skin.  Poisonings are either intentional or unintentional.  Poisoning is an avoidable public health problem that can happen to anyone, at any time or at any place.  If not addressed on time it can cause grievous harm and even death.  Poisoning is much more common than most people think.  Here are some of the facts on posioning:

 1.)  83.8% of poison exposures are unintentional.

2.)  91.3% of exposures involve only one poisonous substance.

3.)  Most poisonings involve medicines, vitamins, home-care products, illegal drugs, plants and metals.

4.)  The vast majority of poisonings in the United States can be attributed to drug overdose.

5.)  Approximately 90% of poisonings occur at home.

6.)  Among those exposed, children, below the age of 6 years, are the most vulnerable.

7.)  Poisoning, in children, can be prevented by keeping drugs and harmful substances out of their reach.

8.)  Food poisoning is caused by a variety of pathogenic bacteria, virus, parasites and prions.

9.)  Hygienic food preparation and handling can prevent food poisoning.
