Cold weather got you down? Well, how about using it to your advantage? Outdoor exercise, especially in the winter, can be a fun way to shake up your fitness routine.

Not only do winter fitness activities and sports give your routine a “pick me up,” but they can also cure cabin fever, give you increased energy, and limit you from bacteria and germ exposure, from which you may be exposed to at your local indoor gym.

What winter fitness could mean for you:

• New exercise options – think cross-country and downhill skiing, snowboarding, and ice skating. Not to mention, snow shoveling and brisk walks with your dog counts as great workouts, too!
• Increased fitness AND energy. Exercise, no matter if it’s done indoors or out, gives one an incredible energy boost, and helps one to keep and stay fit. Dreary winter weather commonly has us feeling sluggish and slow – but a run in the brisk air is a great way to get your blood flowing and burn calories. Cold air can be very invigorating.
• Less exposure to germs. Equipment at your local gym is likely a breeding ground for germs and bacteria. By working out outside – at least one to two times a week – you can reduce your risk of contracting circulating viruses and bacteria from others at the gym – and is a nice way to break up your workout routine.

When exercising outdoors, take heed of the following tips:

• Wear the proper cold-weather clothing.
• Be aware of conditions such as ice, wind chill, and extreme cold.
• Use reflective clothing and/or lights if it is dark or foggy.
