According to a recent study published today in the journal Pediatrics, as featured in an article on CNN.com entitled “Study: Lack of breastfeeding costs lives, billions of dollars,” if new moms breastfed their babies for at least the first six months of life, it could save approximately 1,000 lives as well as BILLIONS of dollars each year.
The study urges mothers to breastfeed their babies for their first six months of life, and stresses to the medical industry that the biggest priority should be to improve maternity care practices in order to increase the number of mothers who breastfeed
States the report, “The United States incurs $13 billion in excess costs annually and suffers 911 preventable deaths per year because our breastfeeding rates fall far below medical recommendations.”
Breast milk alone is sufficient for babies for up to six months, and doing so will help the baby achieve optimal growth, development and health.
While the 2009 breastfeeding report card from the Centers for Disease Control reports that 74 percent of women start breastfeeding their babies upon birth, only 33 percent were still exclusively breastfeeding at three months, and only 14 percent still doing so at six months.
Dr. Melissa Bartick states, “If 80 to 90 percent of women exclusively breastfed for as little as four months and if 90 percent of women would breastfeed some times until six months, “ the vast majority of extra costs incurred each year could be saved.
