Recent studies have proven that a small amount (about 1 oz.) of dark chocolate each day will not only help your heart and you’re emotional health, but it will aid in lowering your cholesterol as well. Let’s face it, who wouldn’t rather have an ounce of dark chocolate a day over a hand full of vitamins or pills?
Emotionally, chocolate puts you in a great state of mind, knowing that it is something that not only tastes delicious, but is healthy for you at the same time. According to studies, a small amount of dark chocolate daily can reduce your LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol) by up to 10%!
Not only does dark chocolate lower cholesterol, it aids in lowering high blood pressure, helps the cardiovascular system operate and the blood flowing. Other benefits of dark chocolate are that it stimulates endorphins and their production, making you literally happy, it contains serotonin which is a natural anti-depressant, and it also contains theobromine, caffeine, and other natural stimulants to make you feel good and energized. Dark chocolate also contains many antioxidants which are very important to any diet for a number of reasons, but mainly to protect the body against the damages of aging. Dark chocolate actually contains about 8 times as many antioxidants as a serving of strawberries in just 1 ounce!
Though dark chocolate like all chocolate contains fat, only one third of the types of fat are actually bad for you. The three types of fat in dark chocolate are, oleic, stearic, and palmitic acids. Only the palmitic acid is a ‘bad’ fat and by only having a small amount (about 1 ounce) of dark chocolate a day, the fatty intake is minimal and the advantages to consuming it far outweigh the negatives brought on by the 1 fatty acid. Dark chocolate is a great addition to any diet. One ounce of dark chocolate a day will lower cholesterol which is detrimental to the preservation of your arteries and your cardiovascular system in general.
