On this Earth day, and every day, as you do your part for the planet, consider the fact that what harms our planet is destructive to our bodies as well. By taking good measures to do what’s best for your body, you could actually be helping the planet at the same time. How?
As featured in the KoolDocs bi-weekly newsletter ‘Earth Day’ issue, here are some easy ways to help your body and be green at the same time:
1. Stop using so many chemicals in your home. Consider organic cleaning products like vinegar, borax, and baking soda.
2. Eat foods in season. Eating fruits and vegetables at the time of harvest means you're eating them when they're fresh, have traveled less and have been stored less. That means a tastier food that has typically required fewer resources to reach you.
3. Switch to a fair trade coffee. According to studies, drinking coffee may re-duce the risk of Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinsons Disease, heart disease, live cirrhosis and gout.
4. Eat less meat. Eating lower on the food chain is one of the most important things you can do to help the environment. Consider this startling fact: If the whole world stopped driving cars and SUVs, shipping goods in tractor trailers, flying planes, sending freighters across the ocean and all other transportation activity, it wouldn't do as much as if we all just stopped eating beef. Livestock accounts for 18% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions, according to the United Nations.
5. Avoid processed foods. Chances are, the less processing a food has been subjected to, the less energy and fewer resources have been expended manufacturing, packaging and transporting it to your grocery store. And real foods haven't had all the nutrition processed out of them.
6. Ride your bike! Get fit and save gas (and reduce carbon footprint) all at the same time!
