It’s official, and honestly, not surprising. Those nighttime snacks we eat while resting with our feet up, watching our favorite television shows, are proven to have worse consequences than indigestion
– a recent study in mice supports the theory that when you eat affects whether the calories go straight to your thighs or get burned off.
The Northwestern University study examined that one group of mice gained more weight when they were fed during times in the day they would normally be sleeping, than the other mice who were fed at times in which they would be awake. Although the mice were fed identical amount of food and exercised the same amount, the mice who ate during times they should have been sleeping weighed 7.8% more than the other mice. The study reports that “simply modifying the time of feeding alone can greatly affect body weight.”
If you are trying to lose weight, but cannot help the nighttime snacking cravings, take heed of these tips:
1.) Eat more food during the day. By regularly eating throughout the day, such as through 5 or 6 small, healthy meals, you will be less tempted to snack late at night.
2.) If TV is the reason why you snack at night, perhaps you can put together a list of OTHER things you can be doing while you watch TV? Most people eat in front of the TV in order to be actively doing something while they watch. So why not get on the treadmill while you watch your favorite primetime show, or grab a book or magazine to read during commercials, or take up that crocheting hobby you’ve been meaning to start.
3.) Don’t keep junk food in your home. Simple as that.
